Day 6
Day 6
We embarked on taxi journey to Tlacolula, about 25 minutes from the hotel. There is a famous market there that covers about 125 acres and attracts people from many Indian villages in the area. It has everything ---endless amount of things, fruit, produce, meat, food, textiles, clothing, tools etc. Once we went in, we weren’t sure we would be able to find our way back to the place where the driver was going to meet us. Bo thought that maybe she’s be able to find some interesting textiles there, but it was mostly the same stuff as in Oaxaca, maybe cheaper, but the same. The real main purpose was to take pictures, which was not easy because Indian women are very sensitive about being photographed. So it was just the cellphone and very quick, no time to compose anything. We got back to Oaxaca around noon and decided to try to get to the Santo Domingo church again. It was Sunday so there were masses. On the way to the church, we stumbled upon a group of mariachis and folkloric dance group in very colorful costumes. They played and danced right by the church. At 12:30 the same guy opened the church and was asking everybody who wanted to get in “Are you here to see the church or for the mass?” This time we knew better so we said “for the mass”. He asked 3 times to make sure, and let us in. We walked around and admired the church, which is absolutely amazing. The whole interior is covered in gold and it has this warm golden glow. Before we noticed, we were locked inside the church with no way out. There were maybe 5 other people inside and a group of mariachis (the same that played outside). We asked them how we can get out and they told us that we have to ask the guy who let us in to let us out. Luckily, he appeared soon and reluctantly unlocked the door to let us out. We had a late lunch from Boulenc again because it was so good. By 2 pm it was about 90F and impossible to walk so we sheltered in the hotel and started packing. Dinner was at the Catedral and was very good . The most interesting dish was moletas of plantain – plantain rolls stuffed with meat and spices and fried. Delicious! We have to leave the hotel at 5:45 am tomorrow for or 7:50 flight.
